Continuing our walk through the central historic area of Mérida over the few days we were exploring, I realized that the secret to capturing the true pulse of the action, is sometimes learning how to stand still within the chaos. We often found ourselves anchoring to a busy street corner, letting the river of daily life flow completely around us. Because everyone is so intensely focused on their destinations and the immediate task of navigating the crowded streets, they rarely notice the camera.
This intense focus gave me the profound privilege of capturing completely authentic, unposed humanity. In the resulting images we recognize tired but resilient expressions, the heavy strain of moving product by hand through the streets, and the quiet dignity of locals waiting for a brief break in the traffic. Every face passing by us held a story of endurance and everyday hustle that I felt deeply compelled to honor through my lenses.
Whether shooting discreetly from the hip or raising the small Olympus E-M10 mk4 for a split second with a high shutter speed of around 1/1250’th of a second, I was able to freeze these vibrant, fleeting interactions. The 14-42mm pancake lens forces me to stay physically embedded in the environment rather than observing safely from afar. It’s a beautifully exhausting experience to be buffeted by the crowd, but one that leaves us with a profound connection to the resilient spirit of Mérida's people.
Here is the second part of our visual journey through these incredible streets of historic central Merida. It is my hope that as you look at these faces, you can feel the heat, hear the noise, and sense the magnificent heartbeat of the city just as we did.
