Museo Casa Montejo Artifacts

By Anne Watcher  •  March 14, 2026
Casa Montejo is one of Mérida’s most important historic buildings—constructed between 1542 and 1549 by the Montejo family, the Spanish conquerors who founded the city. It is the oldest surviving colonial house on Mérida’s Plaza Grande and a rare example of Renaissance‑style civil architecture in Mexico.

While touring it today I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful decorative details including Qing Dynasty vases, Limoge tea service, crystal chandeliers, French crystal candelabras and many blue and white porcelain pieces from China. And the ceiling!!!!!! Of course not renaissance home is complete without a porcelain chamber pot!

Then the textiles, how could I not add them, so hard to keep my hand s off them! 😂😂 Finished with modern version of the ‘kissing bench’.
